spring haiku

During one of my meditations this past week, I heard the words “with spring the bloom, in sunshine I blossom” which then inspired me to compose this traditional Haiku…

with spring comes the bloom
sunshine coaxing a blossom
she rises from sleep. - tsl

As we all await the season of blossoming…

adorn me

Jewelry is my vice and there’s nothing like sighting a grand pair of earrings in particular anywhere they happen to be! I do love my jewels and have taken to photographing things that pair well together so the next time I select any given piece to wear, I know what I’ve liked with it before.

Doesn’t mean that I’ll go with that look again, just means I don’t always remember what combinations I've previously worn; cataloging via photos reminds me of how fabulously I’ve adorned myself in the past. Who knows what I will put with what next so…

toast and snow

excerpt from my journal…

I made a slice of sourdough toast allowing it to brown until it was almost burnt, spread it with a light coat of butter, and took it into the living room so I could watch a few minutes of one of the morning shows. As I opened the curtain, to my surprise it was snowing. Instead of turning on the TV, I settled into the chair across from the sliding glass doors and watched the snow fall as I nibbled. I found myself thinking about the simplicity of a slice of bread, browned and crispy crunchy. Thought about how we used to make cheese toast by putting four pats of butter on a slice of bread then covering them with four pieces of cheese before putting the whole thing under the broiler until the bread darkened and the cheese bubbled; cinnamon toast was made the same way only we covered the pats of butter with cinnamon and sugar. Remembered just plain toast from the toaster spread with butter and blackberry jam, simple yet so deliciously yummy, all made with white bread because who knew anything about whole wheat bread when I was a child. Was there such a thing? I later came to love the taste of rye toast when my grandmother purchased a freshly made loaf from the Jewish deli; with butter, it was a taste that was scrumptiously and uniquely different from white or wheat. So as I sat munching, I watched the tiny snowflakes. If I didn’t focus too hard, they fell in a blurry flurry, when I concentrated, I could pick out individual flakes as they drifted onto the balcony or down to the ground below. I noticed the haphazardness when they fell furiously fast, giggled when they suddenly changed direction to fall softly in straight lines adding inches to the surfaces on which they settled. I chewed as slow as the snow fall making this moment last as long as possible, relishing this unplanned serenity, grateful for this morning gift. Who knew that simply making a piece of toast could evoke such a memorable time as I sat in the dimness of the room brightened only by the light of snow.

Unplanned moments can be such a joy if you stay open for them and…
