you are a breathing thing.
a memory to someone.
a home to a life.
- nayyirah waheed
When I read this it made me pause for a few moments to reflect, particularly on the last line which immediately got me to thinking about our living bodies as a “home to a life”…
…thoughts rest in the uppermost level that is our head, minds open or closed like a window…
…eyes invite light and all that is before us to come in or pull down the shades when there is something we don’t want to see…
…ears listen for the familiar creaks of our bones, for intruders, react to the unfamiliar, hear what we wish…
…actions and sounds burst from within when our extremities and mouth are in motion…
…nourishment sits at the table of our belly, waste finding its way to the proper receptacle (or not) without waiting for someone to take it out…
…breath serves as our air conditioning/heating system, skin helping to regulate the temperature of what comes to our doorstep based on its shade…
…secrets, memories, joy and pain hide in our joints and sometimes need to be acknowledged, even fixed…
…and we decorate the exterior with all kinds of adornment everyday, totally hiding or showing who we really are.
Our body is the living breathing vessel that houses…us. Take good care of your property both outside and especially in, shower your home with gratitude, and coexist with whomever lives in your hood no matter the color of their exterior as you…
