baby steps

As cities around the country began to lift corona restrictions, I continued to feel uncomfortable about meeting anyone to do anything for an extended period, even masked at a social distance. Since March, the only interactions I had had with people were those at any given market or CVS or with passers-by and neighbors during my AM walks. I deeply missed outings with my friends, interacting with participants at my workshops, one-on-ones with clients and the isolation that comes with living alone hovered, overwhelmed me at the least expected moments. Writing, working on a series of collage images, and getting creative in the kitchen lifted my spirits; my living space descended into a frazzled mess that I embraced.

Gradually I began to venture out -- a hair appointment early in the morning, the first appointment of the day for a pedicure, a doctors appointment and the dentist (an appointment I had rescheduled a couple of times before my teeth demanded that we resume our routine visits!). Yet, something, perhaps a distrust of the constantly changing and sometimes contradictory information we receive about the virus, was keeping me from accepting invitations from my friends to meet and sit outdoors to share a meal or even just a quick cup of tea.

One day, I couldn’t find a packet of photographs that I knew I had placed on my work table.A few days later, a journal from a project I started three years ago was not where I thought it was. I had had enough! A little bit at a time, I began to organize the mess that had collected and housed a sadness from the many days of being by myself. When a friend called to make a lunch date; I immediately accepted.

Two days before I drove tomeet her at Hillwood Gardens, my favorite place in DC, I tossed the final bag of heavy into the trash, turned and took a few more baby steps into my next.

Stay safe to keep youand others well and...

keep your peepers open!

ps - I did indeed find the packet of pictures and the journal!

strange & dark waters

I recently saw a writing prompt that asked, “This year, what are you grateful for?” I had actually written something on gratitude a few years ago; I revised it just slightly to read…

the first breath I am gifted each morning

signaling a new day of my life has begun.

the music of morning whispering in my ears,

lifting me on to my path for the day regardless

of the uncertainty outside my door.

the thoughts waking up in my meditative mind

that eventually find their way to paper.

the pulse of abundant creativity rushing through my soul,

allowing a new, more relevant voice to emerge.

the benevolence, love and genuine concern for others

that lives in my spirit no matter what is going on in the world.

As we continue to navigate strange and dark waters, add some gratitude to your compass. Now more than ever…

souls of BLACK folks

I was 10 during the riots of ’68. We lived just one town over from Plainfield, NJ, close enough to hear the unrest, the sounds of gunfire, to see the sky lit up from blazing fires. I wedged myself between my bed and the wall each night, wondering when and if rage would cross the bridge, descend into the park and arrive at our cul-de-sac of seven homes, all but one occupied by Black families. Fearful that our homes would be destroyed, not knowing  if a bullet might come through the window, night would sometimes turn into a day when sleep depravation silenced my anxiety. Though our block went untouched and life moved on, a part of me never got back in my bed.

My full essay, souls of BLACK folks, can be found on the online blog published by SOLSTICE, a (literary) magazine of diverse voices.

In the words of John Lewis, find some “good trouble” to get into; stay safe, stay informed and…

corona visions

I’ve been quite creative on many fronts during the pandemic which, though some folks have forgotten or have chosen to ignore, is still our present state of affairs. My “corona visions…glamour has no restrictions“ collage series is such a distraction from just everything and I’m always surprised by what develops when I sit down to the table. At first, I described them as hand cut paper collaged images that are dressed to be outside somewhere as we stay inside. I’ve changed that to say they are dressed to be outdoors as we continue to practice precautions to keep us safe.

Thus far, 11 glamour girls have stepped out; this is number 10, “outside in the rain.” Dresses, skirts or pants are the focal point of each image; they are designed by piecing together lots of hand cut papers of various patterns that then make one fabulous garment! And yes, the process is as time consuming as stitching actual fabrics, maybe even more so because I'm conscious of ensuring that the clothing looks as if it has movement since the collage itself is one dimensional.

I’ll be at the table today to find out if number 12 wants to arrive and where she wants to go so...

And people, if we’re not more mindful of the health of self and all, we’re going to be restricted to staying home once again, so stay safe to stay healthy out there.

feeling drained

4:05AM…A phone conversation intended as a gesture to connect while apart last evening left me drained. This morning I find myself awake and already exhausted hours before the sun is to rise.  I started looking at some of my photographs, took myself back to a moment several weeks ago when in the near distance, I saw…

I actually speed walked home, got my camera and drove back to the rose garden in front of the Smithsonian Castle to capture the beauty of these blossoms, they were just that stunningly gorgeous! Looking at them right now is restorative, has brightened my morning, though it’s still dark outside my windows.

Right now, it may be difficult to determine if a person’s emotional reactions are attributed to the stressful times we are living through or just who they are. Be as patient as you possibly can with folks. More importantly, take care of you and simply…

i can't breathe

This past week, I found myself thinking about COVID19 and the death of George Floyd, the fact that overnight we went from pandemic to protests, virus to violence, quarantine to curfews. I was just growing comfortable with the numbness to my daily wake up call being the report of local and national new corona cases and deaths. Suddenly, news coverage completely shifted to images of the demonstrations here in DC and across the country. Though it may seem like these are separate events, I believe that many of us understand that there are connecting links between the two. Perhaps the most subtle of these is breath.

“I can’t breathe,” is an action that is all too familiar to me. In January 2019, I woke from a nap unable to catch my breath. My struggle was far from what happens to the detained when an unfazed serve and protect lowers his full body weight into his knee, places it on the neck of a Black man, and deliberately holds it there for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. My moment cannot be compared to those in hospital beds around the world who may not even know how many days they’ve been on a respirator, may never go home. What I do know is what it’s like to lose what is a natural function for most.

The act of breathing is essential to life, is something too many of us take for granted. Breath work has played a major role in my work life; it is the opening and closing of every workshop I facilitate. Unfortunately, the murder that unfolded before all of our eyes has made us aware of just how precious breathing is. When I'm able to begin facilitating again, I know my approach will now take on a deeper meaning. Each time I speak the words, “take a deep breath as you inhale,” I will do so in memory of George Floyd and all the Black, Brown and Yellow people, named and unknown, whose breath was taken by a knee, a gun, or a noose.

I can’t breathe. As long as you can do so, remember and…

enough is enough

Protesters shut down a major highway in SW Washington, DC late Saturday as #justiceforGeorgeFloyd demonstrations took place around the country.

As afternoon turned to evening, peaceful protests took a turn reminiscent of the ’68 riots as looting, fire setting and property destruction erupted in cities from coast to coast. While the demand for justice is valid, frustrations and anger real, violence is not the answer even when a violent act is what sparked this unrest.

Enough is enough, which is why we’re seeing this uprising that is far from over; let’s pray that things can go back to being peaceful in honor of George Floyd.

Stay safe and…

adjustments

My morning walk has helped keep routine in my life and kept my body moving as we readjusted to adjust to a different way of living. This past Thursday, I felt a bit sluggish after just 20 minutes. I pushed on. Twice along the way, I felt like I was going to break down sobbing as I thought about the many changes forced upon us by the virus. Emotionally tired of the restrictions, hearing uncertain news daily, the politics that continues to play with people’s lives, being alone, my body  was having a physical reaction. My knees and right shoulder ached; I wanted to get home as fast as possible. Hopping the bus, hailing a cab or calling a service are no longer options when public break downs are in progress, so I kept walking. I told myself I’d cut it short and take the fastest route home, yet somehow I kept going.

There's a lovely garden path that I frequent and as I approached, I asked the angels to help me. When I emerged from that magical stretch, my body was invigorated. I ended up walking almost 12,000 steps and just under 5 miles that morning, grateful for the spirits who answered my prayer, giving my body the boost and adjustment it needed so I could get back home.

As we continue to adapt, stay safe, be well, take good care and…

A.P. -- after the pandemic

With the temporary closing of most service businesses, I am no longer able to get a pedicure. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. What I’m trying to say is polishing my own nails pales in comparison to the beauty of my toes once a professional has had my feet in her capable hands. I miss and have developed a new appreciation for that monthly treat.

As we remain in our homes, we’ve all had to do without one or more of our extra pleasures. For me, a morning walk is one I still give myself, savoring the blossoming flowers, the trees as their leaves continue to fill out into a green canopy above my head, and the warmer temperatures that brush across my face. I'm more thankful than ever for the short periods of time spent outdoors.

People have asked me what I will do first when we’re on the other side of the pandemic; I really don’t know. I do know that life will not go back, it will go forward with a start date that, at the moment, is difficult to pinpoint. While I believe I have time to gather my thoughts about an answer, one thing is certain, it won’t be "getting a pedicure".

Stay safe, be well, take good care and…

keep your peepers open!

#togethercookingathome

I made this oatmeal for breakfast yesterday using a baked banana and it was soooooooo scrumptious, I had to share!!! These are easy dairy free with honey used sparingly as a sweetener recipes from my kitchen that you can alter to your taste. Full disclosure, I tried baking bananas with cinnamon and nutmeg that tasted good before I read a recipe.  I then decided to read one to get the proper oven temperature and glanced at the ingredients; mine has that soulful touch with a nod to my southern roots.

If you have children and they like bananas and/or oatmeal, they will love…sans the bourbon or rum of course. Experiment with your own ingredients and please come back and comment so we can all get a chance to try something new!

Have fun and enjoy. Stay safe, be well, take good care and…

BAKED BANANAS
Oven 400 degrees, 10 - 15 minutes

bananas
OPTIONAL - bourbon or rum
ground cinnamon
ground nutmeg
honey
OPTIONAL - chopped pecans
OPTIONAL - sea salt (for the nuts(
PAM butter spray (if you have)

Aluminum foil, baking sheet

Line baking sheet with aluminum foil and lightly spray with PAM or rub lightly with butter

Peel and slice bananas lengthwise; place sliced side up on the aluminum foil

Pour a little bourbon or rum over the bananas, drizzle with a little honey

Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg over bananas

Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes; don’t overcook, you want some of the banana liquor to remain

While bananas are baking…Spread chopped pecans close together on aluminum foil & drizzle pecans with honey and a couple of light sprinkles of sea salt
10 MINUTES INTO BAKING OF BANANAS…put them into the oven

Remove bananas and pecans from oven making sure to keep the gooey banana liquor that has bubbled up beneath the bananas (don’t overcook or it will fully caramelize and burn)

Serve warm banana with honey pecans on top

DELICIOUS OATMEAL

Prepare baked bananas and roasted nuts from above. Once they are cooked and cooling a little…

Make your favorite oatmeal adding to the water ground cinnamon & nutmeg. If you like raisins, a minute or two before oatmeal is done, stir some in and finish cooking. Pour into your favorite bowl. DO NOT ADD SWEETENER…you won’t need it.

Scoop off some of the banana liquor and if you are using nuts, stir them into the oatmeal. Top with the bananas…don’t stir them in, just spoon some with every mouthful.

FROZEN DAIRY FREE BANANA ICE CREAM
(to enjoy right after you make it)

frozen bananas (ahead of time, peel, slice into rounds and freeze flat, not bunched up)
OPTIONAL - bourbon or rum; coconut milk if you don’t drink
ground cinnamon
ground nutmeg
honey
OPTIONAL - chopped pecans (or nut of your choice and if allergic, try oat granola though I haven’t put in the oven) preheat oven to 350, baking sheet lined w aluminum foil

Food processor (I use my mini processor because I’m making a small serving), rubber scraper, aluminum foil

Spread chopped pecans close together on aluminum foil & drizzle pecans with honey maybe a little sea salt; put in oven when you begin making ice cream…10 minutes

Place frozen bananas in food processor. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg and splash in liquid of your choice if you want to use one of them

Pulse the banana until they are creamy…you may have to open the top and push them down with the rubber scraper

Use the scraper to remove the ice cream from the bowl putting into individual bowls or a container and place in the freezer

Remove pecans from oven and let them cool slightly before serving over ice cream

Note: the banana “ice cream” melts pretty quickly
